Health care services are one of the unwavering professions in the community. In any economic situation, healthcare is a must to be able to provide the patients with the care that they demand. One of these health-related jobs you can pursue is that of the physical therapist. If you are not familiar with this, here is a step-by-step guide to become a physical therapist.

Get Ready As Early As High School

In taking up a career in the health care industry, start your preparation during high school. Take on more subjects that are related to physical therapy. Basic subjects include physics, chemistry and biology while specialized topics are neuroanatomy, human development, biomechanics and more. Other than these science subjects, also volunteer in a healthcare center during weekends or on summer breaks. This will give you first hand exposure on how physical therapists do their work. In addition, this is good for your educational credentials when applying for future work as a physical therapist.

Obtain A Bachelor’s Degree Related To Physical Therapy

Take up a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy or other science related course during college. This will pave way for the graduate degree that will be pursued later on. You have to know that it a master’s degree or doctorate degree as a minimum requirement to be a physical therapist. Maintain high grades all throughout college as this indicates that you are on the path of a career you are interested. Above average scores, also show your dedication to become a physical therapist.

Pass Necessary Physical Therapy Exams

When you have completed you bachelor’s degree as well as masters degree, pass the National Physical Therapy Examination. A separate state-licensing exam should also be taken in order to practice in a certain state. When all these tests are passed, then you can start working as a physical therapist in various work areas available.

Continuing Education And Specialization For Physical Therapist

Along with other medical professionals, continuing education is essential for physical therapists. This is to keep updated with the new developments that physical therapy may have in terms of tools and techniques. Physical therapists can also specialize in different fields that they want to focus in. Some of these specializations are pediatrics, orthopedic and sports.

Physical therapists care for the physical conditions of the patient. Through their expertise, they are able to correctly guide the patient in their recovery from different ailments as well as injuries. With this step-by-step information, you are sure to be a physical therapist one day.

Physical therapists are those that work as part of the health care services in a community. But these therapists are not just confine in the hospital setting. Various areas require the expertise of the physical therapists and these include schools, homes, sporting and many others. This makes the physical therapist not just an in demand medical profession but the need for them is increasing. And when a profession is getting popular then the earning capacity becomes higher to attract many and aspire being this kind of therapist.

Entry-level position of a physical therapist earns an annual income at $58,409. This is the average for those who have one year or less experience in the actual practice as physical therapist. The salary adjusts with time where physical therapists having one to four years experience receive yearly pay at $60,705 on average. Those that have more than five years under their belt but less than ten years have median salary at $68,134. Ten years of being a physical therapist makes an annual average at $72,256. Then those having more than twenty years practicing as physical therapists take home $74,235.

These salaries are based on average, which can be affected to the area where the physical therapist is working. This means the income can be influenced by how the city is urbanized, the demand for physical therapists in an area as well as the industry where the therapists work and specialize. One that paid high is in the sporting teams, as players need to be on their tip-top shape always. Even if the players are injured, physical therapists have to ensure that they are given the proper therapy to do their play again.

Physical therapists who then gain enough experience through their jobs and taking up specializations can move to another level. Some physical therapists find it a great opportunity to establish their own home clinics. This can provide a more flexible time to practice their craft and enable them to work from their homes as well. Doing so will be advantageous for those with growing families and need to attend to the needs of the family without eliminating their profession. What’s more having your own clinic will increase the income from being an employed physical therapist. More often than not, great physical therapists build their clientele and their clinics over time giving way for expansion. Those that own their clinic average an annual income at $120,000. You can achieve financial freedom with career opportunities in physical therapy.

One way to start a career in the physical therapy is to start working as a physical therapist aide. This is somewhat a slower process than completing a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree first before practicing as a physical therapist after schooling. But through this path, the physical therapist is already exposed to what the work is all about and can easily decide if it is the right course to follow. The physical therapy aide can choose to work part time and pursue further education for advancement in the field.

For a physical therapist aide to know what the tasks are in a daily basis, the training is usually given on the job. A wide range of duties is handled by the physical therapist aide within the clinic, which is geared towards allowing for the smooth flow of every physical therapy session. The work of the physical therapist aide encompasses doing various paperwork, assisting the patients, communicating with other and monitoring of facilities and materials. Having good attention to details, good communication skills, great team player, multitasking ability and working with less supervision are the skills looked for in a physical therapist aide.

The physical therapist aide ensures that the patients are taken cared for while they wait for their treatment to start. It is also the duty of the aide to guarantee that the clinic is clean and the facility is prepared to welcome the patients every day. Paperwork involves patient data recording, retrieval of medical information from the patient, family or other medical professions, insurance claims and other necessary documentation. It is also the task of the physical therapist aide to make sure that the appropriate technician is maintaining all equipments. Materials and supplies should also be replenished in a timely manner to make available always.

Anyone who has a high school diploma can work as a physical therapist aide. But it is essential to note that those applicants with good grades are preferred. One of the requirements to take up physical therapy later on is intelligence and should be manifested on the high school grade already. Those with previous exposure to hospital work are also given the advantage to be a physical therapy aide. The experience allows for better knowledge on how the medical facilities and professions run the operation to serve the patients. With a high GPA in high school and gaining familiarity on the job with volunteer work, the applicant can expect to be chosen as physical therapist aide. Training will then be given by the physical therapist on the job.

Physical therapy is a form of body rehabilitation to any patient that is having a health condition. The medical industry realizes that for a patient to be well there are cases that goes beyond medication. This means that in the physical aspect, a patient must also be given treatment through a physical program that includes exercises and other modalities. It is through physical therapy that the effects of injuries, fractures, lower back pain, cerebral palsy, arthritis and heart disease are alleviated. It the responsibility of the physical therapist to promote, maintain as well as restore health and fitness of the patients.

Patients are usually scheduled for a daily or weekly therapy treatment depending on the extremity of their case. However, usually the limit is set by the coverage of the health insurance. During the first session, the physical therapy will gather medical history and other significant patient information. From there, the physical therapist may have to test the patient in terms of movement to assess where the patient has difficulty in movement. Physical therapy treatment can then be provided on the first meeting to help the patient in pain management. After the session, the physical therapist will then create an individualized program for the patient as home exercise.

When it comes to physical therapy, the patient should also do their part in getting themselves better. That is why the home exercises are made to guide the patient during the days where they are not going to the physical therapy clinic. It is essential then that the patient communicate well with the physical therapist to be able to return to the normal condition in the shortest possible time. The physical therapist in turn will teach the patient on the best exercises to arrive at the best possible result of treatment. With this relationship, the patients will see themselves gradually be back on their feet.

Physical therapists are one of those highly satisfied professionals in their jobs. Aside from seeing their patients be able to do their normal activities, the working environment is very positive. Physical therapists usually work as a team and help each other out in achieving patient care. What’s more, the salary of these health care professionals is also quite good with an annual average income of $75,000. So for those with a passion to serve, like to be with people and enough patience to deal with different patients, this could be the right career to follow.

Physical therapy is part of the health care services offered to patients. Patients are usually referred by a physician to the physical therapist for rehabilitation of the body. It focuses on the muscular system where patients are given an individualized program to better their mobility. Aside from this, the physical therapist also relieves pain, restore the body functions and prevent permanent physical disabilities. Other than the physical therapy sessions within the clinic, the patients are pushed to do home exercises. Physical therapy sessions are usually limited, so with the home exercise, the patients will continue to become well moving on their own.

To become a physical therapist takes more than a bachelor’s degree. The minimum requirement is a master’s or doctorate degree in order to practice in this profession taken from an accredited university or school. From there, a state and national licensure examination should be passed to formally work as a physical therapist. A physical therapist can be required by the state to continue education through classes and workshops. This is essential for medical professionals to keep up to date with the technological advances that are provided in the physical therapy treatment. Physical therapy specializations are options to advance and focus on certain aspects in this field.

The physical therapist works closely with both the physician and the patient. The physician and the physical therapy communicate with one another to be able to see the progress of the patient. It is through sharing notes with the physician that the physical therapist will be able to apply the proper physical therapy program. The physical therapist is not just there to assess the patient but teach the patient on the proper home exercises. That is why physical therapists have longer sessions with the patient than the usual physician consultation. The physical therapist uses modalities, stimulation and other tools to help the patient get treatment.

It is a fact that there is an increase demand for the physical therapists today. It is also a job that is highly satisfying and generates good income. The elderly population is also increasing and they require attention to deal with their aging process as muscles can be tender and pain can be felt in the normal activities. Another is because more people see their expertise to live a quality life. More are becoming fond of getting healthy and with a physical therapist, endurance and strength is increased to do more physical activities.

Physical therapists are health care providers who help rehabilitate people who have been injured or who have illnesses and have just finished surgery. Physical therapists provided exercises and other supervised activities that improve the patient’s mobility and give them pain management treatment. They also play an important role in rehabilitating people with chronic disorders and other physical disabilities. Typically, physical therapists work in hospitals, both local and private. There are also clinics, nursing and residential care facilities and in home health care. But offices of health care practitioners have the largest number of practicing physical therapists. Only a small percent of practicing physical therapists are self-employed.

Like most health care providers, people who pursue physical therapy are highly empathetic and have a passion to help other people. A career in physical therapy demands actively working with patients who are in pain so compassion is a very important quality. A physical therapist must have dexterity as the job entails giving manual therapy and other therapeutic exercises. Not only would he be working with his hands but also he must have no problem with much physical activity. Because PTs spend much of their time on their feet, moving as they move their patients, physical therapists need to have good physical stamina. They are also very detail oriented people, being able to analyze and diagnose a patient’s problem to correctly evaluate treatments and be able to provide safe and effective therapy to the patient.

Because PTs interact so much with their patients, they must also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Physical therapists should be able to educate and explain carefully the treatment programs to their patients, including the families of the patients. And most importantly, they should be able to listen to the patients’ concerns in order to provide an effective care.

Physical therapists provide their services to people with different needs. From functional problems from back and neck injuries, to sprains, fractures and amputations, arthritis, to birth conditions like cerebral palsy, to work and sports related injuries and other conditions. So physical therapists use modalities or varied techniques suited to the patient’s needs. They may use hands-on stimulation using heat and cold, or using adaptive devices and equipment for the treatments but they would have different exercises and activities and also a varied level of intensity that they provide accordingly to the age, condition and need of the patient. They also develop wellness-oriented programs to prevent mobility-loss and to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle for the patient. Though most physical therapists specialize in a particular type of care, whether in pediatrics, geriatrics or sports therapy, they still work together with a team of healthcare professionals caring for the patient.

A lot of people suffer from physical conditions due to their body’s poor healing abilities. People suffering from physical problems especially those related to the neuromusculoskeletal systems should undergo effective treatments that can properly help the body heal from these conditions. One of the common solutions to various physical and health problems today is physical therapy.

Physical therapy is a natural health care treatment provided by physical therapist in order to relieve body pains, treat injuries, promote healthier healing abilities of the body and prevent disabilities. One great thing about physical therapy is that the treatment process and methods are non-invasive and there is no medical tools used in handling and treating the patient’s health problems. A lot of people consider this option compared to other medical treatments and surgical procedures because it is less risky but definitely effective and safe.

Physical therapy treatments are also provided not only for healing purposes but also to improve the overall health condition of the patients. This kind of alternative treatment can help people improve their mobility, range of motion, flexibility, endurance and overall bodily function. Aside from the physical problems and issues, physical therapy can also help people with emotional and behavioral problems by improving the physiological condition and functions of their body.

Injury is very common not only for athletes but even to common individuals. Car accidents and other unexpected events can lead to serious and mild injuries that can affect the body’s functioning and health. To help people with injury recover effectively, physical therapy is needed since this natural method helps the broken bones, muscles and tissues heal well and restore their proper movements after the injury. A lot of people also suffer from stroke and this health condition can result to disability problems since stroke usually affects the body’s ability to move. In order to reestablish the body’s movement and to cure weak muscles, physical therapists can provide specific physical therapy treatments and exercises in order to help patients recover smoothly from the effects of stroke.

People who have undergone major surgery procedure are also highly recommended to undergo physical therapy after the procedure in order to relieve severe body pain usually experienced by patients who have undergone a surgery. Physical therapy also promotes the natural healing process of the body making it very appropriate for patients recovering from surgeries. Physical therapy is also advised for people suffering from arthritis, spinal problems like vertebral subluxation, bone misalignment, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

The career of the physical therapist is a lucrative one and for those that have not enough finances do not necessarily have to turn away from such path. There are other positions available to work in a physical therapy clinic than just the physical therapists to start in this profession. One of those jobs is that of the physical therapist aide. As the name suggests, this job is focused on helping the physical therapist in the clinic. Physical therapist aide does not handle treatment of patients but make sure that other tasks in the clinic are dealt with.

Becoming a physical therapist aide is pretty much easy and do not require a college degree. The minimum education requirement to land a physical therapist aide job is a high school diploma or its equivalent. Those who have some college or training in a trade or technical school may have an advantage in applying for this position. Specific responsibilities are usually provided as on the job training by the physical therapists themselves. Prior job experience may sometimes be preferred by some clinics, as work demand may be hectic at the time of hiring.

Even starting as a physical therapist aide, it is important to finish high school with high GPA grade. The responsibilities in this job are attending to patients, family members and other people coming in the clinic. The physical therapy aide does gathering essential information from patients or family members.

The information is also properly recorded, updated, and kept in filing cabinets. Other paperwork is also included in the clerical duties of a physical therapist aide such as processing insurance claims and providing patient information to the referring physician. Inventory equipment and supply is also maintained by this position from requisitioning, organizing and storing as well as getting a technician to visit the clinic for equipment maintenance.

Being a physical therapist aide is far from the actual physical therapist but with the exposure to the profession, this can be advantageous for an aspiring physical therapist. Starting as a physical therapist aide will gain enough experience in this field and save for the further education that is required to become a physical therapist eventually. After completing a bachelor’s degree, the clinic may even be able to support the master’s degree to become a physical therapist eventually. With the support of the clinic, the aspiring physical therapist will already have a job waiting at the clinic. This can be a job opportunity for those who are determined to reach such goal.
